The 2024 Honda CR-V was recently named by Car and Driver as one of the 10 Best Trucks and SUVs of the year. It borrows a few features from the Accord, most noticeably its powertrains. Meanwhile, the HR-V was chosen as the 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick, and the 2024 version remains mostly unchanged. The CR-V’s powertrains are more powerful than the HR-V’s and more suitable for those looking for a sports performance. Still, price tags overlap considerably on mid-tier trims.

Which SUV is Best For You: Honda CR-V or HR-V?

Honda has repeatedly demonstrated that SUVs don’t have to be huge to be amazing. The CR-V is a compact SUV, while the HR-V is the subcompact option. They deliver similar performance, comfort, design, and technologies. Here’s what you need to know about each lineup.

Performance

The CR-V’s hybrid engine is the most powerful, delivering 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque capacity, while its gas engine has a torque capacity of 179 lb-ft and 190 horsepower. The HR-V’s engine has 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque capacity. Both gas engines have similar fuel economy rates.

There’s space for up to five passengers, regardless of your choice. You can measure the difference in size from a compact SUV to a subcompact one in suitcases. The CR-V, a compact model, can store up to 29 suitcases, while the HR-V can store up to 22 suitcases. The CR-V has 2,166L of cargo volume when the rear seats are folded, but the HR-V is still roomy, with 1,559L of cargo volume.

You’ll also find both fabric and leather surfaces in the mid-tier models on both lineups. The dual-zone automatic climate control system is standard for all CR-V models, but it’s standard only for the HR-V’s Sport-B trim and higher.

All models have a 7-inch TFT centre metre display and are compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. HR-V’s flagship model, the EX-L NAVI, has a wireless charger and SiriusXM.

All models are equipped with multiple airbags, including SmartVent side airbags. The HR-V has standard safety features like a forward collision warning, a collision mitigation braking system, lane-departure warning, and road departure mitigation.
